Xia Hua’s biography

 

Hua XIA was born in Beijing, China. Under the influence and early training of his father, Ren-Gen XIA-a renowned ‘ pi-pa’ performer in China, HUA subsequently stadied the ‘pi-pa’ with different masters from conservatory, which had played a vital role in shaping and consolidating Hua’s technique and musicianship.

Hua came to Belgium in 1987 to embark on studies in carillon-playing at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ Mechelen and graduated in 1995 along with his wife, Li-Ling HUANG, who both became the first Chinese musicians to have obtained diplomas from carillon school. In addition, Hua has worked with musicians from different countries and cultures. Presently he and two renowned lute players-namely, Philippe Malfeyt of Belgium and Abid El Bahri of Arabia-have formed a music ensemble called, ‘Luthomania’, which brings the lute traditions of Asia, Africa and Europe together in musical combinations. Their performances have been featured many times on Radio Klara, Radio1, Radio2 ,RTBF of Belgium, Luthomania’s first second and third CD’s which named ‘periples’ ‘itinerances’ and ‘Peregrina’ also recorded at studio from Radio Klara and Rodio RTBF. ‘Luthomania’ is becoming one of the more influential ensembles in Belgium. In 1997, Hua also founded the ‘ya-tang’ Chinese Music Centre, whose aim is to promote oriental music to the West. In 1998, Hua assisted in inviting the Chinese campanogical expert, Mr.Ming-Ming XIA, to take part in the eleventh World Carillon Fedarition Congress in Belgium. After years of hua’s effort, in 2014 has China the very first Carillon which situated at DaZhongSi Ancient Bell Museum in Beijing. Hua invited the well-known carilloner Jo Haazen-the former director of royal Carillon school ‘jef denyn’ special went to China together with the ambassator from Belgium and The Netherlands to the offcial opening for the first carillon in China, which make’s lot of media focus on the carillon from TV Ridio and newspaper.

Hua’s carillon-playing has taken him to several countries for carillon concerts, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France,and the USA. He is the co-author of a thesis titled, ‘ Chinese bronze (musical) instruments’. Along with Li-Ling Huang
